"This is my submission for The Book Illustration Competition by Folio Society and House of Illustration. The four ideas are:
"Idea 1: Using symbols. War weapons are universal symbols of war/soldier. I have combined war weapons with a rearing horse image to create the idea of the horse as a weapon of war.
"Idea 2: Metaphoric idea. This refers to something it does not usually denote to bring implied meaning to the elements. The metaphorical meaning of smoking gun is evidence of crime against horse during the war.
"Idea 3: Using Victorian Cross as an icon for bravery for War Horse. Icon minimise the subject into a simple and recognisable characteristics. Using Ockham’s razor principle that stated un-needed elements should be eliminated-This process is to avoid inconsistency, ambiguity and redundancy.
"Idea 4: Modification process of omission of the most obvious element of a horse and rider makes it all the more obvious. This can be used to channel the audience focus on what is missing or helped the audience to seek answer from the seen elements as clues."
