MA Graphic Communication
"I approached my project from the perspective of communicating to an audience diverse in backgrounds, preconceptions, needs, and expectations. My goal was to promote transparent communication in a stressful maternity ward setting, with a premise of negotiating the notion of 'universal design/communication' through pictograms.
"My theoretical concept was inspired by the modernist design movements of the early twentieth century (De Stijl, Constructivism, the Bauhaus, the New Typography and the later International Style, Swiss Style and International Typographic Style).
"I settled on the Univers typeface (designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1954) because of its modernist aspirations to communicate a universal message. My layout and pictograph designs have fully incorporated the Univers typeface; embracing the overall themes of my work titled 'Univers All Healthcare: Communicating in Global Maternity Ward'."
