"Exploring the topics of culture and identity in relation to Islamic society, this work studies the effect of cultural influences on identity, expression and representation. It illustrates a narrative of struggle between the global and the local, the self and the other - considering whether to belong or separate.

"The relationship of language and identity is integral to this work, with the use of Arabic script symbolising the Islamic identity. By arranging and rearranging calligraphic characters, the language becomes illegible, and in a sense reinterpreted from its original meaning. They are shapes to be seen and not necessarily read.

"The group identity is one that can nurture a sense of self, but can smother individuality. In order to belong, sometimes we must relinquish our identity. Does our identity come from an internal or an external source? Are you who you make yourself? Or what others make you to be?"
