Sonja has recently completed the online ABC Awards Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media with IDI. She excelled on the course, achieving a distinction, and has chosen to continue her studies with IDI on the BA (Hons) Fine Art course, awarded by the University of Hertfordshire. We spoke to Sonja to discover more about her experience studying online so far, and to ask her why she made the decision to continue as an IDI student:

sonja profile“The Level 3 Foundation was an excellent preparation for degree level study. It offered the chance to use a variety of media and approaches to explore different subjects and to develop creative projects, which for me included producing a textile banner and a stained glass panel based on art work inspired by a trip to Prague. I started to learn how to critically evaluate my own work and to study the work of artists and designers when looking at art history.

“I also realised the importance of taking responsibility for my learning, so although it was great to have the flexibility to fit study round work and family commitments, being mindful of the importance of time management is really vital, especially when moving on to degree level study.

“The interaction with IDI tutors and my fellow students (via the IDI student forum) has been friendly, helpful and encouraging and has built up both my knowledge and confidence. You get to learn so much from their feedback and insightful comments.

“I loved the course – I had excellent support and it gave me the confidence to really push myself and develop my art further, even branching out to designing and producing stained glass. Since then I’ve exhibited my work for ‘Oxfordshire Art Weeks’ two years running as part of a local art studio.

“However, I very much wanted to continue with my studies and obtain a professional qualification (albeit at a later date, as there were financial and work commitment considerations). I looked at the different on-line course options and the BA (Hons) Fine Art as offered by IDI seemed perfect.

“It offered the opportunity for me to develop as a creative professional and to gain an understanding of a wide variety of disciplines from drawing and painting to photography and digital imaging. It also focuses on the business side of things such as organising exhibitions and promoting and selling work.

“Since starting the BA (Hons) Fine Art course and reflecting on the work I have produced for the first modules, I am pleased by, not only how my work has evolved, but also the positive change in my attitude and practice. I think that studying with IDI will help grow my confidence and skills and achieve my aspiration of gaining the BA (Hons) Fine Art qualification.

“Eventually, I hope to be working in my own studio and to be supporting myself financially with my art work. It’s a huge dream, but one that’s worth pursuing through work and determination.

“Studying with IDI is a fantastic opportunity to realise a dream and you will get help, advice and support – but you have to be self-motivated and determined.”
