My experience in the field of Interior Architecture and Design extends over 20 years, originally based in London, and now the City of Edinburgh. My roles have included freelance design for leading commercial design consultancies, founder of an independent design practice and teaching in Higher Education as a Design lecturer, Course Director for Interior Architecture and and Advanced Practitioner. I have a real interest in exploring creative working methodologies, innovation in representation and also in the use of e-learning technologies.
Interior Architecture and Design has always enabled me to combine three main creative interests – architectural design, technical illustration and processes in 3D making. Having enjoyed drawing from an early age, I continue to draw on a weekly basis and I regard this process as a fundamental creative tool. Drawing continues to be a vital way of capturing ideas, exploring how elements may be created and constructed, and also the necessity to achieve successful communication. I continue to find that making physical models and experimenting with materials always delivers the unexpected and inspires new creative directions in our work.
My greatest achievement
Certainly a key professional achievement has been the forming of an independent design practice and the realisation of successful interior architecture and design projects. Having become more involved in teaching and education in recent years, I have subsequently made an important contribution to the development of eLearning and to the design of creative learning methodologies through my own creative practice and also through teaching and research projects. To help students learn and grow their passion for interior architecture and design is very rewarding. I would regard my role in supporting many students reach their potential and make progress towards their ambitions as a valuable contribution to make as a design professional.
I am inspired by design that makes me think differently about our built environment. I am fascinated by creative ideas that can be translated at different scales and also ideas which are about people and the way we interact and inhabit the world around us. I always find that spending time in different spaces, both indoors and outside in the landscape, frequently provides me with a surge of imagination that I can divert into the work I create.
